So that guy who just murdered someone during a network post, you know him?
[Cause someone else here does as well and has fought him twice now. He probably shouldn't admit to this, but that message was pretty appalling even for him.]
Yes, I do. I've had the unfortunate experience of crossing blades with him multiple times back home. His name is Yuber and he is...exceptionally dangerous, and bloodthirsty. It was stupid of me to let him be all this time.
Would it be fair to have condemned merely based on his reputation back home though? However, I should let you know he and I have crossed swords a couple of times here and he seems to be amused by my skill.
His crimes are many, and stretch back decades, perhaps longer. And he is unrepentant of any of them. And even if that were not enough, he has killed at least one man that we know of here. Even if the man was a criminal—and I would not take him at his word, there—that is not on its own sufficient justification for murder.
Truly? You're lucky to have walked away unscathed from those fights. Yuber is one of the most vicious opponent's I've ever had to fight. An entire party could fight him all at once, and he would still be the victor, like as not.
But I have to ask, under what circumstances have you crossed blades with him more than once?
[Probably best then that she doesn't know that one of those times was in a dream and if it were real he'd be deed now. He definitely can't handle fully powered Yuber by himself, but without his inhuman powers, they are about equal, especially if he makes use of his beserker ability for a bit more of an edge.]
I'm merely saying to not blame yourself for having done nothing until you had proof he wasn't going to adapt like I did. [Because of course he's also an unrepentant murderer. Only difference is he's not killed any people since coming here.]
Once was in those dreams after the masquerade and then we met later and dueled again. Keep in mind that people with inhuman powers like myself lost many of those abilities. I can't fly without this place's magic and I lost a lot of the stamina and durability that Monstrum form gives me. The difference is I remember when I was on the level of a human in ability so it's easy toi adapt. [Since he was never truly human being artificially created and all.]
[ After receiving Chris's letter, Arthur sets up an appointment. There are always a fair amount of duties he needs to attend to, in particular now much in the way of politics with Celliwig. But this sounds to be a serious matter, so as soon as he's able to get back to Camelot, he sets up the appointment. Chris is summoned to the throne room to stand before Arthur. ]
I hear you have news of a terrible threat to Camelot. I am sorry that it took so long to hear your tale, Lightfellow.
For a royal summons, Chris comes dressed in her armour, wishing to present herself as a knight, if not necessarily one of Avalon yet. First, she places a hand to her breastplate, and bows in respect to the king before answering.
"The situation in Celliwig caught us all off-guard, Your Majesty. Please think nothing of it. I am here now, and I can present my case to you, and for this you have my thanks." Those formalities out of the way, Chris straightens, and presents her case.
"The threat in question is one of the other beings summoned here to Avalon, from my world. His name is Yuber, and while I have crossed blades with him, his history is far longer than his conflict with me. For centuries, he has been a force of chaos and destruction on my world, and now he is here in Avalon, preying on the citizens of Camelot. One murder he committed over the network allowing any to hear, and I have no doubt there have been others because Yuber craves violence, suffering, and death. While he runs free, the people of Camelot are not safe, and he will not offer any help in stopping the calamity. I come before you today Your Majesty, to ask your leave to apprehend Yuber and bring him to face your justice for the lives of your citizens he has taken, and before he can endanger our efforts to halt the calamity."
Arthur listens quietly, folding his hands in front of his mouth as he thinks over what is being said. It's a very challenging thing, to declare someone innocent or guilty with vague evidence. No one had technically witnessed the murders, and even with the post, all he would need to say is that it was special effects and that he was a horror fan.
That said, Arthur has no doubt that Merlin has means to extract information that he'd like to know more about himself-- they will find an answer.
"You have my permission to apprehend him, alive and unharmed. I will have Merlin speak to him to ensure the truth beyond a shadow of a doubt."
"Thank you, Your Majesty. I am indebted to you. I will assemble my team and begin immediately." Unharmed is going to be tricky, but with the right plan maybe they can catch him unawares. And if not, they'll simply do what they need to defend themselves and subdue Yuber; no more, no less. As long as she can bring him in in one piece and Merlin can extract the proof they need, Arthur is likely not going to care about Chris' team needing to defend themselves. It was ever the same with the Zexen Council; work with their orders when you can, work around them when you have to. At least she won't have to do that so much with Arthur.
"I will contact you again when I have Yuber in custody so he may be submitted to Merlin's examination."
[What on earth—oh, yes. Razor, Chris realizes after a moment. Rinea has been teaching the boy how to write. Chris has seen him around with her during those lessons but they've not interacted much at all, until now. Setting aside what she was doing, Chris turns her attention to her device.]
Hello Razor. Yes, this is right. I'd be more than happy to help you practice. Is there anything you'd like to talk about while we do so?
I do have a favourite food. I have always enjoyed a good steaming bowl of beef stew; it is warm and very filling, especially with vegetables chopped in. I am not terribly good at making it myself, unfortunately.
[Chris knows Claire's right, the dragon team was already so large that she knew she'd be superfluous, and she lacked one of the spirits that would have helped against the Stone Giant. Lestari made sense, and she was able to keep the healers safe to do their work, but...]
Yes. Yes it did. If I keep telling myself that, it might start to sink in. Thank you, Claire.
How are you holding up? Is there anything you need?
[Since confirming that Hawk is gone—really gone—Chris has not had a very good time of it. She managed to make the post informing everyone else that her lover had been forced to take his leave, and then...well, she hadn't had a good day. She had wept, and felt herself foolish for doing so. Chris Lightfellow, Captain of the Knights of Zexen, the second Flame Champion, crying over a man. What foolishness. She'd always known it was a possibility one of them could just...disappear one day. She'd seen it happen when Claire's ward had vanished...and now not entirely unexpectedly, here was Claire herself, offering to do for Chris what Chris had done for her. Keep her steady. Make sure she wasn't alone.
Which is why there's none of the usual dithering. Claire is a good friend, and knows Chris too well at this point. And around her, Chris feels no need to wear her usual stoicism. It's sort of exactly what she needs right now. And cold notwithstanding, it is a lovely night for a walk.]
Yes. Goddess, yes, more than anything.
Where would you like to meet? I should warn you I...don't think I shall be very dignified about this.
[All of that is perfectly reasonable. Claire had done no better when Sherry had vanished. And she was sure that if Leon or her brother or anyone else from home showed up, it'd be no different. She'd be a wreck, and she knew better than most what Chris needed.
It might be cold, but not so cold that they would struggle. Plus she had a couple of warming potions, and other tricks to ward off the cold if need be.
Surprised, at least a little, that there's no argument, she's already heading out the door.]
Meet me at the edge of the Western Wood. I've got a spot in there we can go for privacy, so you don't have to pretend to be dignified. Unless you'd rather stay indoors. That's fine too.
No, the Western Woods sound good. I could use the fresh air, honestly. I will see you presently.
[Throwing on the warm clothing Rinea gave her, Chris quietly takes her leave from the house, making her way from Camelot to the Western Woods. The night air is crisp but clear, and the wind is rustling through the branches of the trees.]
"Claire?" She calls, looking around with a sniffle, and not from the cold. Her eyes are most definitely red. "I'm...here."
Claire's nervous. She knows she shouldn't be, but she can't help it. She's been mentally preparing for this all week, but she's never been great at this kind of thing. Pacing back and forth around her living room, she's just waiting for Chris to arrive for the dinner they'd both agreed to. The food, sitting in the oven, was ordered and she was sure it was just right (as she didn't trust her own cooking)...and The Dog had blissfully agreed to make himself scarce, occupying her mount as well.
It should be perfect, but she's let her head spin and spin, and as such nearly jumps when the knock finally comes at the door.
"Just a sec!" she calls, hurrying over to peer out of the window.
Chris takes a moment after knocking to quickly run a hand through her hair one last time, making sure no errant locks are out of place, shifting to adjust the item she's holding in her arm so as not to damage it. That florist really had done well...Claire was going to love this arrangement, she was sure.
Some movement out the corner of her eye gets Chris' attention and she turns to see a familiar and welcome face peering out from behind the glass. With a warm, affectionate smile, making sure her gift is out of Claire's line of sight, Chris waves. She's chosen an ensemble altogether...different from the formal attire she normally wears, and with some outside help has applied some make-up as well. Her lips are certainly a deeper shade of red than usual. A green headband completes the look.
Laughing to herself, Claire waves Chris over towards the front, hurrying to meet her there.
When the door opens a moment later, Chris might be surprised by Claire's choice of clothing. She wasn't, for once, in a jacket and jeans. Instead she'd opted for something with a bit more pizazz. She had a favorite color, and she was confident that she looked amazing in it, so why change that up? The makeup she'd opted for was light, just some lip gloss and a few other things to jazz herself up a little. The heels are also new but she felt they fit, and she'd been practicing wearing them for days just for this.
Claire dips her head, grinning a broad, goofy grin.
"You look amazing," is what she leads with, stepping back to let Chris inside. "...you're killing it in that dress."
"I could easily say the same of you." Chris replies, looking at the ensemble Claire has picked out. "And so I will. You look incredible, Kitten. And thank you." Claire's red contrasts nicely against the deep green of Chris' dress...and the bouquet of red flowers tucked in her arms, which she promptly presents.
"And...these are for you. I know roses are considered traditional, but you deserve more than what is simply expected." She carries on. "They're gladiolus flowers. Do you know them?"
